Plot summary
A scroll holds the power to keep whoever recites it strong, young and unharmed, and its guardian carries that protection for sixty years, after which a successor must take over. In 1943 Tibet, prophecies mark a young monk as his master's heir; he gives up his name, takes the scroll, and gets away when Nazi soldiers under Colonel Strucker overrun the temple. He then spends six decades on the run. In the present day he begins following Kar, a young pickpocket whose selfless streak suggests he could be the next guardian, and offers to train him. Kar falls for Jade, a young woman he meets when a local gang confronts him.
