Plot summary
German forces control Czechoslovakia, and Reinhard Heydrich arrives in Prague, where his underlings impose his authority on the towns and villages. In Lidice, František Šíma looks after Anežka, his paralyzed wife, while carrying on a long affair that the village accepts as a fact of life; only his elder son objects. A drunken quarrel ends with the death of one of his sons, and Šíma is sent to prison. The village follows the war from a distance, talking of partisans in the forests and taking pride in two local men who have joined the pilots in England. Václav Fiala, a married man, courts the young Anička by claiming he is a resistance fighter with a secret mission.
