Biography

John Doe is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, bass player, poet and actor who co-founded the Los Angeles punk band X and still performs with it. Born in Decatur, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met guitarist Billy Zoom through a local paper in 1976. He also performs with the Knitters, a group that mixes country, folk and punk, and has released solo records. As an actor, he played the bartender Pat McGurn in Road House (1989) and J.W. Brown in Great Balls of Fire! (1989), then starred in Roadside Prophets (1992); he later appeared in The Specials (2000), The Good Girl (2002) and Brokedown Palace (1999) and played Jeff Parker on the series Roswell. 1. Beyond film

Doe's recording of "I Will Always Love You" is heard on the jukebox in the 1992 movie The Bodyguard, during a dance between the characters played by Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. Warner Bros. put it out on audio cassette in September 1992, and it is thought that no CD version exists.

  2. Beyond film

For Todd Haynes's 2007 movie I'm Not There, Doe recorded two Bob Dylan covers, "Pressing On" and "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine." The soundtrack included both, and Christian Bale, as Pastor John Rollins, lip-synched Doe's vocals to "Pressing On."

  3. A change of course

Doe met guitar player Billy Zoom in 1976 through an ad in The Recycler, the free weekly paper in Los Angeles, after moving there.

  4. Behind the award

Doe co-wrote most of X's recorded songs with Exene Cervenka, and the band's album Wild Gift was named "Record of the Year" by Rolling Stone, the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.

  5. Behind the camera

Doe wrote and compiled stories with Tom DeSavia for Under the Big Black Sun, a book on the LA punk scene from 1977 to 1983, inviting musicians such as Exene Cervenka, Henry Rollins and Mike Watt to contribute chapters.
