Plot summary
Gensan and Ruby live hand to mouth in Los Angeles on his fast food job. Her diminished mental capacity makes holding a job difficult, and she wants a child, but Gensan will not father one with her. When the restaurant closes for good, Gensan bets on a backyard cockfight and kills the man who will not pay. Ruby abducts a neighbor's infant daughter that same day. Gensan steals the dead man's car, collects Ruby and the baby, and drives out of Los Angeles. Ruby names the infant Irene, though she knows almost nothing about caring for a baby.
