Plot summary
The Specials rank seventh among the world's superhero teams, a group of oddballs without the money or corporate backing of better-known outfits like the Crusaders, so they take small disasters and underrated villains. Their newest member is Nightbird, a teenage fan with bird powers and very sensitive hearing, who arrives as the team's leader, the Strobe, announces a merchandising deal with a toy company. The deal would finally give the team an action figure line, and the members disagree about whether the recognition is worth the independent image they have kept. Other teams court the Weevil, the group's most popular member.
