Plot summary
Barbara Mandrell grows up in Texas, where her musical gift is clear early. While she helps at her father Irby's music store, her unplanned turn on a steel guitar draws the notice of the country guitarist Joe Maphis, who invites her to his Las Vegas and Los Angeles shows. The travel wears the family down and the bookings stop, so as a teenager she performs locally with her family's band. She and its drummer, Ken Dudney, fall in love, and Irby objects to the age gap. Dudney becomes a Navy pilot, Irby comes around, and they marry in 1967. They settle near a Navy base on Whidbey Island, Washington, where Barbara expects to give up performing. With Dudney deployed, she and Irby visit the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and she decides to chase a career in music.
