Plot summary
Neal Cassady tells the story as a letter he is writing, moving between the events leading up to Joan's suicide attempt and the hours that follow it. A rain-soaked Neal takes Joan away from her job, and the two spend an intimate night together; afterward she sits on the bed, unhappy, while he keeps telling her he loves her. Neal is twenty in 1946, holding a job at a tire plant and living among friends such as Ben, who comes to visit him, and Harry, who proposes stealing a car and driving out into the country with some girls. At the plant, his friend Jerry covers for him.

- Director Stephen Kay wanted to release the film the same day as Con Air and Speed 2, joking he would advertise it as "the movie that Keanu Reeves did instead of Speed 2," but distributors got nervous the blockbusters would bury it and pushed the date back.
- Keanu Reeves let his weight balloon out to 200 pounds to better suit the role of Harry, though he had already gained much of it after a back injury in a game of hockey during the lead up to filming 1996's Chain Reaction.
