Biography

Lee Remick was an American actress who began on Broadway at 18 and went on to work in film and television. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, she made her Broadway debut in Be Your Age in 1953 and took guest roles on television anthology series before Elia Kazan cast her in her film debut, A Face in the Crowd (1957). She came to prominence in Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder (1959), and for Days of Wine and Roses (1962) she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress as the alcoholic wife of Jack Lemmon. Her other films included Wild River (1960), No Way to Treat a Lady (1968), The Detective (1968), The Omen (1976) and The Europeans (1979). She was nominated for a Tony for Wait Until Dark, won Golden Globes for The Blue Knight (1973) and the miniseries Jennie: Lady Randolph Churchill, and earned seven Emmy nominations. She died in 1991.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Lee Remick was announced as Marilyn Monroe's replacement in the comedy Something's Got to Give after Monroe was fired for absenteeism, but co-star Dean Martin refused to continue, so Remick moved on to The Running Man and The Wheeler Dealers.

  2. Beyond film

    In 1964, Remick took a role in the Broadway musical Anyone Can Whistle, whose music and lyrics were by Stephen Sondheim and whose book and direction were by Arthur Laurents. It ran for just one week, and her performance is preserved on the original cast recording.
