Plot summary
A bomb kills Cal Asby, an insurance salesman and mortician in Queens, as private detective John Shaft arrives at his call for help. Shaft is questioned by Captain Bollin and released for lack of evidence. Johnny Kelly, Asby's partner, owes $250,000 in gambling debts to the mob boss Gus Mascola, money he had meant to take from the firm but that was moved and hidden before Asby died. The house is ransacked before Shaft and Arna can go through it. Bollin tells Shaft that the two men ran a numbers racket behind the insurance office and the funeral parlor, and that with Asby gone the mob may move in on the businesses; he asks Shaft to help. Shaft tells Arna he wants to inspect the partnership papers, and warns Kelly that he intends to protect her.

- MGM rejected Ernest Tidyman's first submitted outline for Shaft's Big Score, and the screenwriter turned that rejected story into the novel Shaft Among the Jews.
