Plot summary
William Conroy, a former college professor, is serving a life sentence for the car accident that killed his lover, one of his students. In the penitentiary an inmate tells him that fourteen prisoners have died there in two years, and the next day that inmate is found dead. On the way to a parole hearing the van carrying Conroy and other inmates crashes, and he gets away from the scene and asks his lawyer, Eric Hawthorne, for help. Hawthorne is hard to convince that someone wants Conroy dead, so the two of them and the reporter David Dart try to find out who inside the prison is behind the deaths.
