Plot summary
Victor Frankenstein is a cold, arrogant genius and a womanizer whose interests run to anatomy. His father Alphonse forbids him to carry on the experiments he keeps at the family home, so Victor leaves for medical school in Vienna. The Dean's daughter becomes pregnant by him, and he is sent back to the castle. There he fits out a laboratory, works at reviving the dead, and builds a composite body out of human parts. It is brought to life.

- In the mid-1960s David Prowse, later Darth Vader in the first Star Wars trilogy, went into Hammer's offices asking to play one of their monsters and was abruptly dismissed. Years later Jimmy Sangster approached him to cast him as the creature in The Horror of Frankenstein.
- Ralph Bates was cast as Baron Victor Frankenstein, a role never offered to Peter Cushing, who had played it five times previously for Hammer. The casting was part of an attempt to build Bates into a new star for Hammer.
- David Prowse is the only actor to have portrayed Frankenstein's monster in more than one Hammer film. The Horror of Frankenstein was his first such appearance; his second was Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974).
- Budgeted at £200,000, The Horror of Frankenstein and Scars of Dracula were the first pair of films for which Hammer ever sought independent U.K. financing, with EMI backing both £200,000 budgets.
- Shot over six weeks, the film used recycled sets from two earlier Hammer productions, Taste the Blood of Dracula and The Vampire Lovers.
