Andrew Cruickshank
Biography
Andrew Cruickshank was a Scottish actor whose early stage career grew out of provincial repertory instead of the civil engineering he had planned. He took roles in Othello in London, Richard of Bordeaux on Broadway, and Victoria Regina at the Gate Theatre in the 1930s. In 1939 he appeared as Claudius in Tyrone Guthrie's modern-dress Hamlet at the Old Vic with Alec Guinness, and he later played the Earl of Warwick in Saint Joan on Broadway. His first film was Auld Lang Syne in 1937, in which he portrayed the poet Robert Burns, and he went on to be typecast as judges and doctors. He achieved his widest fame as Doctor Angus Cameron in the BBC series Dr. Finlay's Casebook, broadcast from 1962 to 1971, and stayed with the part on BBC Radio 4 until 1978. He also starred in the radio legal drama The Senior Partner and chaired the Edinburgh Festival Fringe board from 1970 to 1983.
