Dandy Nichols
Biography
Dandy Nichols was an English actress who first worked as a factory secretary in London before drama, diction and fencing lessons led to a charity show and a Cambridge repertory job. She acted early as Barbara Nichols, then took the childhood nickname Dandy. After the Second World War she returned to the theater and began film work, mostly comedies, often as a maid or charlady. Her screen debut came in Hue and Cry (1947), followed by The Fallen Idol (1948), The Vikings (1958), Georgy Girl (1966), Carry On Doctor (1967), The Birthday Party (1968) and O Lucky Man! (1973). She was best known as Else Garnett, Alf Garnett's long-suffering wife, in Till Death Us Do Part, the BBC sitcom. Later television work included playing opposite Alastair Sim in William Trevor's The Generals Day, plus appearances in Flint, The Tea Ladies and Bergerac. Her stage work included Ben Travers's comedy Plunder and David Storey's Home, performed in London and on Broadway.
