Plot summary
Donald Free works for the U.S. State Department in France until he is caught trying to take French state papers, loses the post and is sent home. Jobs are scarce in the Depression, so he persuades Dan Hogan, a crooked private detective, to take him on as a partner. What Free does not know is that Hogan's business is bankrolled by the gangster Tony Bandor. Bandor is losing money to Janet Reynolds at his gambling tables and hires Hogan to dig up a scandal he can use to keep her from collecting her winnings. Hogan hands the assignment to Free without explaining what it is really for. Free begins watching Reynolds.
