Biography

Hank Patterson was an American actor and musician who was born in Springville, Alabama. He had hoped to make his living as a serious pianist, but he played piano in vaudeville instead, and by the end of the 1920s he had settled in California, where he began acting in movies during the 1930s. His first identifiable screen appearance, uncredited, was in the Roy Rogers Western The Arizona Kid (1939). He usually played cantankerous types along with townsmen such as blacksmiths, farmers, hotel clerks and shopkeepers, mostly in bit parts and character roles in Republic Pictures Westerns and later in television Westerns. He also made cameo appearances in Bert I. Gordon science fiction films, including Beginning of the End (1957), The Amazing Colossal Man (1957) and Attack of the Puppet People (1958). He was best known for two recurring roles, stableman Hank Miller on Gunsmoke from 1962 to 1973 and farmer Fred Ziffel on Petticoat Junction and Green Acres.
