Plot summary
During a plutonium bomb test at a Nevada military site, the device fails to detonate on cue. A civilian aircraft comes down nearby, and Lt. Col. Glenn Manning runs into the blast area to pull the pilot free. The bomb goes off, and he survives with third-degree burns over nearly all of his body. Paul Linstrom and Eric Coulter treat him, then find the burns gone by the next day. His cells are multiplying at an accelerated rate, and he is moved to an army research center in Summit, Nevada. There his fiancée, Carol Forrest, finds him grown to about 16 feet, and Linstrom says he and Coulter cannot yet say how to stop the growth.

- Charles B. Griffith was hired to adapt the novel and turned it into a comedy; after Roger Corman dropped out and Bert I. Gordon was hired, Gordon and Griffith worked on the script for only a day before Griffith quit, and Griffith's writing partner Mark Hanna stepped in.
- AIP's special effects technician Paul Blaisdell designed and built all of the tiny-sized props used in the film, and the props turned up again in the 1958 sequel War of the Colossal Beast via flashback footage.
- The film and its sequel were riffed on cult mockery series Mystery Science Theater 3000, where actor Mike Nelson played the title character twice in the mid-movie host sections of the show's third season episodes 9 and 19.
