Plot summary
Bob Jones is twenty-eight and works at GCHQ, the British listening station, translating intercepted Russian conversations. A Soviet spy, Ramsay Dodgson, had gone undetected there for ten years before he was caught, and in response the staff are encouraged to report one another. Bob tells his father, Frank, a widower who ran a business after retiring from the Navy, that he wants to leave the job and marry Cynthia Goodburn, and that he believes the British and the Americans are as corrupt as the Russians. Frank, patriotic, is offended. Bob decides to report his department's operations under the new policy, though he does not know whom to approach. Frank then learns that his son has died in an apparent fall from his roof, and with Cynthia's help he sets out to learn what Bob meant to expose.
