Plot summary
Jean Brodie teaches at Marcia Blaine, a girls' school in Edinburgh, in the 1930s, and she has little patience for the prescribed curriculum. She believes she is in her prime and speaks to her four chosen pupils, Sandy, Monica, Jenny and Mary, about art, love and the fascist leaders she admires. The girls go to museums and the theater and have picnics on the school lawn, which the headmistress, who dislikes their precocity, wants stopped. The music teacher Gordon Lowther courts Brodie and hopes to marry her, while the married art teacher Teddy Lloyd still pursues her. Brodie tells the girls she will leave the school only if she is assassinated.
