Plot summary
Lance Poole, a Shoshone who served in the Civil War and came home with the Medal of Honor, rides back to Medicine Bow, Wyoming. He and his father own a large, valuable stretch of land, and most of the town resents them for it. A doctor refuses to treat the elder Poole, who dies, and Poole is turned away when he tries to buy a drink in the saloon. Attorney Verne Coolan finds a loophole in the homesteading law and moves to take the property. Poole asks Orrie Masters, a woman practicing law in the town, to help him hold on to it. She needs petition signatures to overturn the law's application, and the townspeople she approaches will not give them.
