Plot summary
In 1935 Paris, the French diplomat David Talbot and his wife Lucienne have been married three months when a note from Carlos Le Duc demands a million francs for an old debt. David has never met him and has him arrested. In court, Le Duc claims the two men were acquainted in 1922, when David was a petty criminal called Jean Pelletier. David's memory of that period is blank, lost in a train wreck, and Dr. Tessier, the psychologist who treated him afterward, supports his account. For the other side, Dr. Alex Dubroc calls a diagnosis of amnesia unreliable and suggests David made his up. A nightclub singer, Michelle Allaine, is then brought in and says she recognizes him.
