Fanny Ardant
Biography
Fanny Ardant is a French actress and director who has received two Césars and a Lumière Award. Born in Saumur in 1949 and raised in Monaco, she made her first stage appearance in 1974. François Truffaut noticed her in a television drama and gave her the lead in The Woman Next Door (1981), a breakthrough opposite Gérard Depardieu that brought a César nomination. She earned another nomination for Confidentially Yours (1983), also directed by Truffaut. In 1997 she won the César for best actress in the comedy Pédale douce. Fluent in English and Italian, she has appeared in Hollywood and British productions, including Callas Forever (2002), in which she portrayed Maria Callas. In 2003 she received the Stanislavsky Award. She became a director and screenwriter with Ashes and Blood in 2009, made the short film Absent Chimeras in 2010, and directed the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in 2019.

Big break
Fanny Ardant was 31 when François Truffaut, who had noticed her in a television drama, called her in to play the female lead of La Femme d'à côté, the part that broke her career open.
A change of course
After graduating, Ardant worked for the French embassy in London. She was sacked for poor timekeeping and for being dishevelled, which was blamed on the social whirl she enjoyed there.
Behind the camera
To draw attention to the difficulties faced by Romani people in Europe, Ardant directed and starred in the 2010 short film Absent Chimeras.
Beyond film
On 19 July 2009, Ardant appeared alongside Gérard Depardieu in a rare staging of Sardou's La Haine, part of the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon, and France Musique aired the concert.
