Plot summary
In a village outside Grenoble, Bernard Coudray shares a house with his wife Arlette and their son Thomas. The house next door is rented to Philippe Bauchard, a flight controller, and his wife Mathilde Bauchard. Bernard and Mathilde are shaken when they meet: years before, both were single, and an affair between them had ended painfully. Arlette invites the new couple for dinner, and Bernard keeps away from Mathilde. A chance encounter at a supermarket in Grenoble revives the old feelings, and while the two households stay friendly as neighbors, Bernard and Mathilde meet in secret. Madame Odile Jouve tells their story.
