Biography

Ethan Phillips, born in Garden City, is an American actor who started in New York City theater, winning Best of the Actors' Festival at Direct Theater in 1977 and appearing in the premiere of a Christopher Durang play and a revival of Eccentricities of a Nightingale. He joined the sitcom Benson in 1980 as PR man Pete Downey and stayed for five seasons. He is best known as Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager from 1995 to 2001, a role he played for nearly the whole seven-season run, and he also appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Enterprise, and the film Star Trek: First Contact. His films include Critters (1986), The Island (2005), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), and Irrational Man (2015). His stage work includes Broadway and off-Broadway productions such as All the Way, and he has performed voice work for Star Wars video games.

  1. Getting ready for a role

    Tennessee Williams helped shape a revival of Eccentricities of a Nightingale at Playwrights Horizons. When leading lady Jill Eikenberry required extra time for a costume change, Williams wrote a new monologue and dictated it to Phillips himself.

  2. First role

    Phillips began his Star Trek work in 1990 as the Ferengi doctor Farek on The Next Generation, before playing Neelix on Voyager from its 1995 start and staying one episode short of its full seven-season run.

  3. Behind the camera

    Phillips spent six summers as an actor at the Sundance Institute's Playwrights Conference in Utah, where he worked on his play Penguin Blues. Drawing on that time, he helped start First Stage, a lab for playwrights in Los Angeles.
