Plot summary
Bernice Rhodenbarr, called Bernie, is a former San Francisco burglar who now runs a bookstore. Ray Kirschman, a police officer on the take, presses her back into the trade. Dr. Cynthia Sheldrake, a dentist, then offers her a job: get into the home of her ex-husband, Christopher, and take back the jewelry she says is hers. Bernie does the break-in. Christopher is killed in the house while she is there, and Bernie is the only person who can be placed at the scene. Facing a burglary charge and a murder charge, she and her friend Carl Hefler, who works as a dog groomer, begin asking around the bars for people who knew Christopher.

- In a 2013 interview with Kevin Smith, screenwriter Jeph Loeb disclosed that Burglar was initially intended to be a serious vehicle for Bruce Willis, with Whoopi Goldberg filling the role of the character's neighbor. When Willis dropped out, Goldberg took on the lead role.
