Plot summary
The Krites, small aliens that eat flesh, break out of a prison on an asteroid and steal a ship. A warden sends two shape-changers, Ug and Lee, to follow them to Earth. In rural Kansas, the Browns gather for breakfast. Brad Brown hears the Krites' ship come down and goes out with his father Jay, who finds a cow partly eaten. The Krites then cut the farm's power.

- Although Critters is widely believed to have been inspired by the success of Joe Dante's 1984 film Gremlins, the script was written by Muir around two months before Gremlins went into production, and then rewritten to reduce the apparent similarities between the two films.
- Special effects coordinator Chuck Stewart hired Joseph Lombardi as a consultant for the barn explosion, rigging the second-floor ceiling with Primacord carrying an explosive charge, while the Critter swallowing a cherry bomb was controlled by puppeteers positioned below in a hayloft operating its stomach and eye movements.
- Muir finished the first draft on September 9th, 1981 and the script sat in storage for around three years; Herek, who had become friends with Muir while they worked as assistant editors on City Limits, was looking for his next project when Muir offered it to him.
