Plot summary
Shirley Lyner is a high school junior who babysits for families and thinks about how she will pay for college. Michael Beltran, one of the fathers who hires her, dines and flirts with her after a job, and he is frustrated with his marriage. Boys her own age strike her as immature. Driving her home one night, he pulls over at an abandoned train yard, and they explore it together. They kiss, decide it should not happen again, and he pays her extra anyway. The extra money gives her a plan. Michael asks whether any of her friends can babysit too, and Melissa Rowan volunteers, with Shirley taking a cut of 20 percent. Brenda Woodberg is brought in as well, and the girls have business cards printed.
