Plot summary
Liz Chambers becomes stranded in Hope, a small town where her arrival was foretold a century before by Jonas Hathaway, the preacher who founded it. Hope's history holds a darker chapter: its people once nailed victims to crosses in the cornfields as sacrifices, until a girl from the neighboring town of Liberty raised the alarm. Liberty's residents answered by nailing the preacher who led the killings to a cross, and legend holds that he will one day be reborn. Unable to leave, Liz stays the night, and there she meets Sarah Austin, a tabloid reporter chasing stories of scarecrows that come to life. Sarah wants Liz to accompany her to the cornfield.
