Plot summary
Abe Lucas arrives at Braylin College in Rhode Island to teach philosophy, carrying a reputation as a drinker and a womanizer. In truth he is a disillusioned idealist who no longer believes he can change anything, and he goes through his classes without conviction. Two women take an interest in him: Rita Richards, a chemistry professor unhappy in her marriage to Paul, and Jill Pollard, a gifted student who lives with her parents and is seriously involved with Roy. Jill seeks him out to talk about Dostoevsky and Kant. Abe sleeps with Rita and feels no better. Over lunch in a diner, he and Jill overhear a woman in the next booth describing a custody battle she expects to lose.
