Dyan Cannon

Biography

An American actress, filmmaker, and editor, Dyan Cannon was born in Tacoma, Washington, and began working in television in the late 1950s. She spent a decade in episodic shows, Broadway, and B movies before her breakthrough in the sex comedy Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She received a second supporting Oscar nomination for Heaven Can Wait (1978) and won the Golden Globe for that performance, while Such Good Friends (1971) brought a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Cannon also wrote, produced, directed, edited, and appeared in the short Number One (1976), which was nominated for an Academy Award in the live action short film category. She made her feature directing debut with The End of Innocence (1990), a semi-autobiographical story she also wrote and starred in. On television, she played Judge Jennifer Whipper Cone on Ally McBeal from 1997 to 2000.

Cannon had been lined up for roles in The Traveling Executioner (1970) and Double Indemnity (1973), yet she withdrew, and Marianna Hill and Samantha Eggar stepped in for her.

About the name
After doing some part-time modeling, Cannon met producer Jerry Wald, who told her to adopt Cannon as her professional last name. She then signed with MGM and trained under acting teacher Sanford Meisner.
Beyond film
Cannon worked with Brenda Russell to co-write the title track for the album The Woman I Am, which was recorded by Chaka Khan.

During the mid-1970s, Cannon performed her own musical stage show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. She is also a singer and songwriter.
