Plot summary
After three flops, Harry Stone comes back from Paris to New York, where a studio executive pitches him a science fiction movie called The Pickle. Farmers grow an enormous pickle, turn it into a spaceship and fly it into space, and the studio pays Harry a great deal to direct it. The premiere finds Harry among his agent Phil Hirsch, who declares the picture a hit, his son Gregory Stone, his daughter, his mother Yetta and his former wives, among them Ellen Stone. His Parisian girlfriend, Françoise, is with him as well. Harry regrets the job and fears the release will end his career.
