Plot summary
In Brooklyn, young Charlie Carbone nearly drowns at the beach and Louis Booker saves him; the two become best friends. Twenty years later, Charlie runs a New York beauty salon set up by his stepfather, mobster Salvatore Maggio, and Sal's men take most of the profits. After Charlie and Louis botch hiding stolen televisions, police discover Sal's warehouse, and Sal gives them one more chance. Frankie Lombardo sends them to carry a package to Mr. Smith in Coober Pedy, Australia, and warns them not to open it. On the plane, Louis looks inside and finds $50,000 in cash. Driving toward Coober Pedy, they hit a red kangaroo. Louis dresses it in his jacket and sunglasses and poses for photographs, and the animal comes to, kicks Charlie and hops off with the $50,000 in the jacket.

- Kangaroo Jack was shot in Australia as an R-rated mob comedy with profanity, sex and violence, and actor Jerry O'Connell says he filmed a full-frontal nude scene, before producers were unhappy with the rough cut and reworked it.
- After test audiences responded well to the kangaroo scene, and inspired by the marketing behind Snow Dogs, producers reshot new CGI kangaroo footage and re-edited the dark mob comedy into a PG family film, even redubbing repeated uses of "chickenshit" as "chicken blood."
