Plot summary

Stephanie is unwanted in her own house. Her mother and father quarrel constantly and ignore her, and they give her mixed messages about sex and religion, so that she is never sure what is expected of her. Years pass, and she moves from her early teens into her twenties. A string of boyfriends does her further harm, and her self-esteem shrinks to almost nothing. She tries to satisfy the people around her, gives in to everyone but herself, and gets nowhere. After a nervous breakdown, her parents admit her to a rehabilitation center, where a compassionate psychiatrist is the first person to take her seriously.
