Biography

Dev Patel is a British actor and filmmaker whose first professional role was Anwar Kharral in the E4 teen series Skins. Born in Harrow, he broke through as Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire (2008), which brought a BAFTA leading actor nomination. He played Zuko in The Last Airbender (2010), a part that earned a Golden Raspberry supporting actor nod, then took leads in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), its sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015), and the science fiction thriller Chappie (2015). He also appeared in the HBO drama The Newsroom. His work as Saroo Brierley in Lion (2016) won a BAFTA supporting actor award and an Academy Award nomination in the same category. Later credits include The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019), Hotel Mumbai (2018), The Green Knight (2021), and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023). Monkey Man (2024) marked his directing debut; he also co-wrote, produced, and starred in it.
