Plot summary
On the Indian quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, Jamal Malik, a tea server from a Mumbai slum, keeps answering questions correctly and comes within one question of the grand prize. The program's staff and then the police doubt that a young man with no schooling could know so much, and he is accused of cheating. While he is held and questioned, Jamal recounts the life behind his answers: growing up in the Juhu slum with his older brother Salim, the years the two spent riding trains and selling goods to survive, and Latika, the girl he met as a child. An inspector replays the show and listens to how each answer came to him.
