Plot summary
After his mother's death, Vincent, who has Tourette syndrome, is enrolled by his father Robert in a behavioral facility. He shares a room with Alex, a Briton who has obsessive-compulsive disorder, and gets to know Marie, treated at the facility for anorexia nervosa. A child films Vincent on a cellphone, Vincent lashes out, and he and Marie are summoned by Dr. Mia Rose, who scolds them. Marie takes the doctor's car keys, and when Alex tries to alert Rose as they slip away at night, he is carried off with them. The three drive toward the ocean so Vincent can scatter his mother's ashes, though he cannot recall the exact spot from the trip he once took with her. They settle on Santa Cruz. Rose tells Robert his son has gone missing, and the two set off after them.
