Plot summary

In 1986, Saroo is a five-year-old boy living in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. He follows his older brother Guddu to work, then dozes off on a bench at the railway station, and when he wakes Guddu is nowhere. Climbing through a parked train to look for him, Saroo falls asleep in a compartment and wakes to find the carriage moving and the doors shut. Days pass before the train stops in Calcutta, where he cannot follow the Bengali speech and no ticket clerk recognizes the village name he gives, Ganestalay. He spends a night at the station among street children and runs when men come for them. A woman named Noor offers him shelter and mentions a man, Rama, who will send him home, but Saroo slips away from her. An Australian couple, Sue and John Brierley, adopt him.
