Plot summary
Johannesburg buys armored scout robots from weapons manufacturer Tetravaal, and they take over much of the police work. Deon Wilson, the engineer behind them, builds a prototype artificial intelligence meant to mimic a human mind, but Tetravaal's chief executive Michelle Bradley refuses to let him test it on a police robot. A rival engineer, Vincent Moore, has built the heavy weapons platform MOOSE and resents that the police ignore it. Deon takes a damaged scout slated for destruction and heads home with it. Ninja, Yolandi and Amerika, gang members, abduct him and order him to reprogram the machine. He installs his software, and the droid wakes with childlike fear. Yolandi and Deon quiet it, teach it a few words, and give it the name Chappie.

- Contrary to a 2014 Entertainment Weekly story, the production used no motion capture: visual effects supervisor Chris Harvey explained that Copley's performance served only as a reference for the animators, who replaced him with the CGI for Chappie.
