Plot summary
Kid lives with his mother Neela in a village in the Indian forest, where she tells him stories about Hanuman. Baba Shakti, a guru in the city of Yatana, wants the villagers' land, and he sends the police chief Rana Singh to clear them out. The village is attacked and Neela is killed; Kid's hands are left scarred when he fails to save her. Years later Kid makes a living as a masked fighter at Tiger's Temple, an underground club where he is beaten for money. Rana spends his time at Kings, a club that hides a brothel and a cocaine trade, and Kid talks his way inside as a kitchen hand, hoping to get close to the man he blames.

- Netflix bought Monkey Man for $30 million, then decided it was too gritty for Indian audiences and worried about their reaction to its political commentary, quietly shopping it around and nearly canceling the release.
- Jordan Peele saw the finished film, came on board as producer under his Monkeypaw Productions banner and persuaded Universal Pictures to acquire it from Netflix for under $10 million.
- With India shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, the shoot was postponed and nearly canceled, so Dev Patel filmed on a small island in Batam, Indonesia, where he broke his hand and later two toes when a stuntman dropped an ax on his foot.
- Dev Patel tried to recruit his Chappie director Neill Blomkamp to direct the film, but Blomkamp declined and suggested Patel direct it himself, given Patel's descriptions and passion for the project.
