Plot summary
The tale arrives as a telefilm broadcast in Britain in 1978. Henry Sugar is the name a bachelor adopts while spending the fortune he inherited on gambling. He finds a book containing a doctor's account of Imdad Khan, who said he was able to see and interact without the use of his eyes. The doctor had watched Imdad perform feats in a circus act and afterward interviewed him. Imdad had run away as a boy and joined a traveling circus, where he sought out a guru called The Great Yogi. The Great Yogi could meditate while his body rose off the ground, and he reluctantly taught Imdad the method. Henry tries Imdad's meditation, fixing his gaze on a candle flame and picturing the face of someone he loves, in the hope of reading the backs of playing cards.
