Plot summary
Q examines the Soviet microchip that Bond brings back from Siberia and identifies it as a match for one made by Zorin Industries, a government contractor, built to survive the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear blast. Bond goes to Ascot Racecourse to watch the company's owner, Max Zorin, whose horses keep winning. Sir Godfrey Tibbett, a racehorse trainer who also works for MI6, believes the horses are drugged, though the tests came back clean. Tibbett brings Bond to Achille Aubergine, a French private detective, who tells him Zorin plans a horse sale later that month. Bond and Tibbett travel to Zorin's estate in France, Bond posing as James St. John Smythe, a rich dilettante who has inherited horses, with Tibbett as his valet.

- Early publicity in 1984 announced that David Bowie would play Zorin; he initially accepted but pulled out, saying he didn't want to spend five months watching his stunt double fall off cliffs. The part was then offered to Sting, who turned it down, and finally went to Christopher Walken.
- In Paris, stunt parachutists B.J. Worth and Don Caldvedt were to jump from the Eiffel Tower, but after Worth's jump supplied enough footage, Caldvedt was told he would not jump. He parachuted off the tower without authorisation from the City of Paris and was sacked for jeopardising filming there.
- Leftover petrol canisters from the filming of Ridley Scott's Legend burned Pinewood Studios' 007 Stage to the ground on 27 June 1984. The stage was rebuilt and reopened in January 1985 as Albert R. Broccoli's 007 Stage, where A View to a Kill was then filmed.
- Duran Duran got the job after bassist John Taylor, a Bond fan, approached producer Albert Broccoli at a party and drunkenly asked him when he was going to get someone decent to do one of his theme songs.
- Dolph Lundgren, then dating Grace Jones, was visiting her on set when an extra was missing, so director John Glen asked him if he wanted to play one of General Gogol's KGB agents, standing below Gogol at the racetrack confrontation.
- Richard Maibaum's original script had Zorin manipulating Halley's Comet into crashing into Silicon Valley, until co-writer Michael G. Wilson insisted on a more realistic plot.
- Duran Duran's "A View to a Kill" reached number two in the UK and number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, making it the highest-charting Bond theme; the 2015 track "Writing's on the Wall" later beat its UK position.
- Priscilla Presley was originally going to be cast as Stacey Sutton, but she had to be replaced by Tanya Roberts because of her contract with Dallas.
