Robert Brown
Biography
Robert Brown was an English actor who worked for years as a supporting player in film and television before becoming known as M in the James Bond series, taking over from Bernard Lee. In the 1950s television series Ivanhoe, he played Gurth, the companion of Roger Moore's Ivanhoe. He appeared without credit in Ben-Hur (1959) as the galley-master and in the BBC soap The Newcomers as factory worker Bert Harker. His role in One Million Years B.C. (1966) was Akhoba, leader of the Rock tribe. His first Bond film was The Spy Who Loved Me, where he was Admiral Hargreaves. After Lee died in 1981, the producers left M out of For Your Eyes Only and gave his lines to Bill Tanner. Brown took the role of M in 1983, recommended by his Ivanhoe co-star Roger Moore, and debuted in Octopussy (1983). He played M until 1989, and Judi Dench succeeded him in GoldenEye in 1995. He died in 2003.
