Biography

Dale Dye is a retired Marine captain who became an actor, technical advisor, radio host and writer. Born in Missouri, he served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, then retired from the Marine Corps in 1984. Determined to improve Hollywood's battle scenes, he founded Warriors, Inc., which trains actors and advises productions. He put the cast of Platoon through a mock boot camp and had a small role in the film, then worked on Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific. His screen acting includes Casualties of War (1989), Outbreak (1995), Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), Rough Riders (1997), Knight and Day (2010) and Larry Crowne (2011). He also wrote novels and hosted radio and television programs.

  1. Getting ready for a role

    In 1985, Dye pitched a mock boot camp to Oliver Stone, a fellow Vietnam War veteran, to prepare actors for Platoon. The principal cast then went through 30 days of military-style training, with limited food, water and sleep, and blanks fired to keep them awake.

  2. Behind the camera

    Dye started Warriors, Inc. to make Hollywood battle scenes more realistic. The company trains actors in war films and gives directors research, planning, staging and on-set help.

  3. A change of course

    Dye spent 13 years as an enlisted Marine and rose to master sergeant. He became a warrant officer in 1976, and in 1984 he left the Marine Corps at the rank of captain.

  4. A change of course

    After he retired, Dye spent a year as a correspondent for Soldier of Fortune magazine. In Central America he reported on the region's conflicts and trained troops in El Salvador and Nicaragua in guerrilla warfare.

  5. Beyond film

    Dye served as a consultant while the Medal of Honor video games series was being developed. For Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, he lent his voice and likeness to Gunnery Sergeant Jack Lauton.
