Biography

Brad Johnson was an American actor who worked as the Marlboro Man before turning to screen acting. Born in Tucson, Arizona, and raised in Oregon and Texas, he began acting with a 1986 episode of the soap opera Dallas, then was cast by Roger Corman in the biker film Nam Angels. His theatrical debut came in 1989 with Always, Steven Spielberg's romantic drama, in which he played the pilot Ted Baker opposite Richard Dreyfuss and John Goodman; reviewers likened him to Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and James Stewart. He went on to star in Flight of the Intruder (1991) as a naval aviator, and appeared in Philadelphia Experiment II and The Birds II: Land's End. In the early 2000s he played Rayford Steele in the Left Behind film series, and on television he had roles in Melrose Place, Rough Riders (1997), and Soldier of Fortune, Inc.

Johnson competed in rodeos as a youth and turned professional in 1984. A movie scout seeking cowboys for a beer commercial found him, leading to his Marlboro Man stint and Calvin Klein modeling before acting.
First role
Five months after Johnson got to Hollywood, Roger Corman gave him the starring role in Nam Angels, a low-budget biker film. It was his first film role.
