Plot summary
An asteroid called Galileo's Child is on a collision course with Earth. Dr. Dana Shaw supervises a crew of space miners sent to bore into the rock and undermine its structure so that it can be diverted. A technology aboard lets the astronauts reproduce Earth's atmosphere around them. Ryan runs the drilling operation and looks forward to the money the job will bring, while Shaw is focused on the science and turns down his advances. During the excavation, the miners uncover the fossilized body of a humanoid alien in a mortuary, where a heavy platinum plate is fixed to the wall. The hibernating alien soon wakes among them.
