Plot summary

In 1955, Brian and Peggy Bell volunteer for Operation Samson, a secret experiment in a Nevada desert bunker where they are exposed to a nuclear detonation meant to test radiation immunity. They survive, and the military learns that Peggy is pregnant. Their son David is born with a persistent fever, and his parents die within hours of a phenomenon called Fire Syndrome. David grows up in California as Sam Kramer, a thirty-four-year-old instructor whose body catches fire when his emotions run high; he can also influence electricity. He finds Lisa Wilcox, whose parents met similar fiery misfortunes, and the two search for an explanation.
