Carmen Maura
Biography
Carmen Maura is a Spanish actress whose screen career has spanned seven decades; she worked first as a cabaret singer and made her film debut in The Man in Hiding in 1970. Born in Madrid, she studied philosophy and literature in Paris. A major role in Tigres de papel followed in 1977. She appeared in Pedro Almodóvar's first film in 1980 and made several more with him that decade, among them Law of Desire (1987) and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which brought her a European Film Award Felix for best actress. The pair reunited for Volver (2006), whose female cast shared a Best Actress prize at Cannes. No other Spanish actress has won as many Goyas for Best Actress; she has three, and four overall, plus a Cesar Award in 2012 and a Locarno Excellence Award. Her other films include Common Wealth (2000) and 800 Bullets (2002).
