Plot summary
Ten years have separated Sarah from her twin Gaëlle. Sarah is a Carmelite in a convent in Brazil; Gaëlle has come out of prison, where she served time for a heinous crime, onto probation, with no relief from what society makes of her. Joachim, a priest and physician, attends Sarah and can find no medical cause for the abdominal pain that weakens her. When the two of them are transferred to Paris, he looks for Gaëlle and examines the symmetry said to link twins. A reporter is investigating Gaëlle's past, and the head of Sarah's convent keeps watch over her.
