Plot summary
Bennie Tetrocini, the seventeen-year-old son of the famous conductor Carlo Tetrocini, works as a waiter on a cruise ship. When the ship is stranded in Buenos Aires, he goes looking for his half-brother Angelo, who calls himself Tetro and settled there years ago to write. Tetro is argumentative, orders Bennie to leave once the ship is repaired, and introduces him to others as a friend rather than a brother. His girlfriend Miranda, a psychiatrist, is welcoming. Bennie finds pages of a script Tetro wrote in a code the two learned at prep school and begins transcribing it, pressing to learn the family history Tetro keeps to himself.

- In May 2008, Argentina's actors' union claimed production of Tetro had been shut down because members were working without contracts, amid reports of script changes and long filming days. Coppola's spokesperson Kathleen Talbert denied any halt, saying shooting continued.
- In 2024, Francis Ford Coppola said Tetro was not meant to be a success but a "test" for himself, made after he had "sort of retired" from professional directing following The Rainmaker, self-financing small films and holding unusual rehearsals to prepare for Megalopolis.
- Before Vincent Gallo was cast as Tetro, Matt Dillon and Joaquin Phoenix were up for the role. Francis Ford Coppola said choosing Gallo would "raise a few eyebrows," but that seeing him play the part would "open some eyes."
- Carmen Maura's role as the literary critic Alone was originally written to be male, and Javier Bardem had been attached to play it. Coppola changed the character to a woman, saying the interaction between the two characters would be more intriguing with opposite sexes.
- Argentine film star Susana Giménez made a brief cameo in Tetro, her first performance after a ten-year hiatus from film acting.
