Bob Steele
Biography
Bob Steele was an American actor who worked mostly in Westerns, with screen credits running to more than 400 Westerns in film and television. Born in Portland, Oregon, he started in movies as Robert Bradbury Jr. in historical Westerns directed by his father, then took the name Bob Steele for The Mojave Kid (1927), which made him a star of silent Westerns. Near the Rainbow's End in 1930 was his first sound picture, and through the 1930s and 1940s he was one of the leading B-Western names, appearing for studios such as Monogram, Republic, and Producers Releasing Corporation, including entries in the Three Mesquiteers and Billy the Kid series. He moved into character parts in bigger films, among them Of Mice and Men (1939), The Big Sleep (1946), and The Atomic Submarine (1959), and on television he was Trooper Duffy on F Troop and appeared in Maverick and Death Valley Days. He died in 1988.
