Plot summary
On their fifth wedding anniversary, Kathryn Mason tells her husband Richard that he has fallen for her younger sister, Evelyn Turner, who is staying with them. Richard does not deny it. He sees no way out, since Kathryn would never grant him a divorce. Family friend and psychologist Dr. Mark Hamilton hosts a party for the couple, where Evelyn meets Hamilton's colleague, Professor Norman Holsworth. Driving home, Kathryn tells Evelyn that their mother is lonely and will need her. Richard, angry, crashes the car and breaks his leg. After the leg heals he still claims he needs a wheelchair, and Dr. Grant, his doctor, calls the trouble psychological and prescribes exercise, so a trip to a mountain resort is planned. Richard arranges to stay behind to finish work.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Conflict (1945)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Humphrey Bogart disliked the Conflict screenplay and refused the lead role in the spring of 1943. He accepted only after Jack Warner threatened to block production of Passage to Marseille, or to give its lead to another actor, if Bogart would not appear in Conflict.
- Conflict was shot in 1943 but held back from release until 1945, when a dispute over the rights to part of the story was finally settled.
- Conflict is the only one of the five films Humphrey Bogart and Sydney Greenstreet made together in which Bogart, rather than Greenstreet, plays the villain or corrupt character.
SPOILER
The song used as a leitmotif to indicate the supposed reappearance of Kathryn, called 'Tango of Love', is actually the 1925 composition 'Jalousie (Tango Tzigane)' by the Danish composer Jacob Gade.
